Breaking Barriers: My Journey to Becoming a Data Analyst at 18

In the dynamic realm of data analytics, age is proving to be no barrier to extraordinary achievement. At the age of 18, I embarked on a remarkable journey as a Data Analyst, defying expectations and shattering preconceived notions. Join me in exploring the narrative of my path to becoming a digital degree apprentice studying at the University of Warwick.

Everything I'm going to be writing about is a true and accurate representation of my journey (no b.s!) - I want to share my genuine experience in this process, from grades to applications, from GCSEs to a Degree Apprenticeship and finally from a student to an upcoming Chartered Data Analyst.

Early Academic Challenges

My academic journey commenced at St. Peter's CofE Academy, where I not only excelled but completed one GCSE a year ahead with a grade 8 in GCSE English Literature. This early success set the stage for my capacity to navigate complex subjects.

My GCSEs in a nutshell:

  • Grade 9-8 in Combined Science

  • Grade 8 in English Literature

  • Grade 8 in Mathematics

  • Grade 8 in Religious Education

  • Grade 7 in French

  • Grade 6 in Computer Science

  • Grade B in Further Maths

  • Grade 5 in English Language

I had good GCSE grades, which allowed me to pursue my chosen A-Level subjects, which I was really grateful for, however these are nowhere near the 'straight-9s' that others in my year got.

My A-Levels in a nutshell (notice a difference?) :

  • A in Business

  • B in Maths

  • B in Physics

  • C in EPQ

I actually never sat my A-Levels in 2020 due to the Covid pandemic, my cohort were in the unfortunate position where we were plotted on a curve by a socio-economically biased algorithm to decide our grades ... Unlike having the luxury of paid education, which has been reported to set grade quotas in order to 'look good' to the public.

Previous Work Experience

I had the opportunity of working part-time in multiple jobs such as a Customer Assistant at Carphone Warehouse, an Administrative Officer in the Ministry of Justice and a Community Response Co-ordinator at St John Ambulance.

These roles allowed me to develop soft skills such as leadership, teamwork and time-management - all of which are being utilised in my daily role, and undoubtably helped me to gain this apprenticeship.

Digital Aptitude

Beyond the traditional classroom, my passion for technology blossomed. Engaging in personal projects such as designing websites and developing Raspberry Pi applications, I honed my computer skills. Additionally, I ventured into tutoring GCSE and A-Level Business Studies, demonstrating a commitment to knowledge sharing.

Fun Fact - I created a fully functional NAS with my Raspberry Pi which allowed me to share files across my home network.

Recognition and Awards

Dedication and achievements did not go unnoticed. I was honored to be a finalist for the prestigious Data IQ and Multicultural Apprenticeship Awards, underscoring my outstanding contributions and recognition in the field.

Becoming a Digital Degree Apprentice at 18

The pivotal moment in my journey arrived when I secured a digital degree apprenticeship at the age of 18. This opportunity marked the beginning of my immersive experience in the world of data analytics within a renowned organisation.

A degree apprenticeship isn't a walk in the park! Grades are only half of the equation, employers are looking for people who stand out through a wide range of competencies and their ability to expand and develop. After all, you're on an apprenticeship to learn and grow; with real world experience.

You can throw theory-only based teaching down the drain (university) - would you rather have 4 years of industry level experience whilst getting a wage and university paid for, or 3 years of (useless) university teaching with 1 year-ish of unpaid internship?

Conclusion

Reflecting on my journey so far, I take pride in breaking barriers and embracing the challenges of becoming a Data Analyst at the age of 18. From academic achievements to leadership roles and impactful contributions at work, these experiences have shaped me into a committed team player ready to make a positive contribution to every endeavor.

This is just the beginning of my journey, and I am eager to continue enhancing my abilities, increasing my knowledge, and supporting the success of the broader field of data analytics. Join me as I navigate the exciting chapters that lie ahead.
